Vintage Vibes: Real Friendships That Help Older People Thrive

At WardSide House, we understand that growing older should never mean growing lonelier. That’s why we’re proud to shine a spotlight on Vintage Vibes, a brilliant charity in Edinburgh dedicated to creating real, lasting friendships for people over 60 who may be feeling isolated or alone.

In our view, Vintage Vibes is a shining example of how connection, compassion, and community can transform lives — and it’s something we’re deeply inspired by.

What Is Vintage Vibes?

Vintage Vibes is an award-winning service combatting loneliness across Edinburgh, offering:

  • One-to-one befriending based on shared interests

  • Volunteer companionship and long-term friendships

  • Community events and social groups led by older people themselves

They call their service users “VIPs” — and rightly so. Every individual is valued, celebrated, and encouraged to stay socially active and connected, no matter their age or mobility.

"We don’t just make matches — we make meaningful friendships."

Why Their Work Is So Important

1. Loneliness is a serious health risk
Over 100,000 older people in Scotland report feeling lonely most or all of the time. This kind of isolation can lead to poorer health, depression, and reduced independence.

2. It boosts confidence and happiness
By building real relationships, Vintage Vibes helps older people regain a sense of purpose, belonging, and joy — something we see echoed in our own home here at WardSide.

3. It keeps people connected to their community
Whether it’s a walk to the park, a cuppa at a café, or joining a choir, small social interactions help people feel seen, valued, and included.

What We Can Learn in Elderly Care

At Wardside House, we’re always looking for new ways to enrich the lives of our residents. Vintage Vibes reminds us of the power of:

  • One-to-one connection

  • Shared passions and hobbies

  • Time, attention, and listening

Their befriending model mirrors our own person-centred approach — where every resident is supported not just physically, but emotionally and socially too.
